Roald Dahl

Parents from Norway but they came to Wales and he was born in Cardiff in 1916. He went to boarding school where he was very unhappy and where beatings happened regularly. After school he went to work for Shell and he was sent to East Africa to work, here he experienced all the adventure and excitement he craved. When the war broke out he joined the RAF and became a first class fighter pilot, but he crashed his plane and was in hospital for about 6 months while he regained his health he did fly again but he began to experience bad headaches that caused him to black out and he therefore had to give up flying.
He was sent to America as an example of an ace pilot to encourage Americans to stay with the war effort as they had just joined after Pearl Harbour being attached.
It was during this time that he began writing a book "The Gremlins" with Walt Disney. His books are mostly fantasy and full of imagination. They are always a little cruel with a final twist, You always find the theme of the story being told by the child with lots of evil and bad grown ups but always one who is good and makes up for all the bad people. There is always some humour a thrilling mix here of the grotesqu and comic. A common theme is that people are not what they appear to be.
He wrote books for adults and children such as James and the Giant Peach
Fantastic Mr Fox
Gremlins
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Matilda
The Witches
The Twits
The BFG

He also wrote screenplays and was who wrote the screenplay for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He had his own illustrator.

I don't like the illustrations much their too simple and childish but I think that's the beauty of it, It's like that children drew the images. It has it's own style if you look at the image you know straight it's Roald Dahl. His images are also very colourful.

The more modern comics looks newer and cleaner I think, The colour are cleaner whilst the old ones look a bit grainy.

Beano Comic                                                                                               Journey into Mystery

The incredible Hulk                                                                                  Phantom Lady

The X- Men                                                                                      Dynamic Thrills

                                                                                                                                                        Space Detective

Blue Beetle

Wonder Woman
"The Dandy Comics from 1950 and 1951 are complete in bound volumes as in The Beano from 1958. Wizards from 1953 and 1954. 1954 where Desperate Dan makes an improbable crossover from Dandy and Dudley Watkins illustrates the cover of Wizard 492 to publicise the new series. The boyhood of Desperate Dan".
In some comics which are the same have developed over the years as in the artwork, some of the modern ones are made on the computer or hand drawn then transferred to the computer to make them cleaner. Their more daring with the clothing in the new ones rather then the old ones. They tend to show more than the old ones. The super heroes one hasn't changed much.

Here's a good example of a Manga/ Comic has developed over the years and it's the one I happen to enjoy the most at the moment.

Chapter 1

                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Chapter 100

Chapter 200

                                                                                                              Chapter 300

Chapter 305

I find that the characters have changed a lot through the years I find that Belldandy has changed more the girl that's always with the man. It's the same illustrator Kosuke Fujishima, his skills has developed over the years to a very nice looking characters and better in my opinion.
This is a small comic I did for college, It's about magic jelly beans if you are familiar with sims 3.
The bottom one is we had to do a comic about a person that our tutor printed out, we had to determine what kind of person they are. He is called Jim Moriarty because he looks evil, and it shows what
he is planning what he likes and dislikes.

This is just a cake recipe we had to do that had no words or numbers
it had to be all illustrated and clear enough so whoever makes the
cake knows what they are doing, I made a Strawberry cheese cake

Typography

This is my typography work I did in college, gotta say I didn't enjoy typography as much.
This is the letter A in different kinds of style this was the best I could think of and do.

This is writing random words down and then turn the book on it's side and write over it, I wrote in any way I could think of at the time.
We had to think of one letter in the alphabet and instead stating the obvious like A for apple we had to think about people our age and how can we make it different, I chose M for music and this is what I could think of at the time.

This is choosing a font we liked and try doing different letters in the style I chose and make them the same size.
I found this on Deviant art it's a rose made out of words and ink it is made by Enotsgnik. I like it very much, I like he managed to shade it and shaped it beautifully. The writing is very effective and gives a new feel to the rose.

I like this typography, it looks so elegant and free. All of it has really nice words and I like the bird. I think it looks really good in black it's more effective and I like all the different fonts it makes it look "groovy" It looks a bit 60's because the writing. This is made on Deviant art by anjajackson.

I think this one looks very funky and it looks very futuristic because the way they did it, it reminds me of a Miku Hatsune music video. I like the red tint in it. This would be a very good album cover. I'd like to this in colour I think that would look really nice also. I am not sure which language it is written in though. I really like it, it stands out a lot. This is made by Magicheartstar on Deviant art. It's very detailed also.

This one looks like a party scene, I really like it even though you can't see their faces you can tell their having fun. I think this would look nice in colour also. I like the black and the grey in the back it's really nice. I like that the ones in the back are faded and the ones in front are black, it's very effective. The typography bit looks like some songs lyrics. It goes nicely with the picture. I really do like this one it stands out. It's not detailed but I think that's what so nice about it also. This is made by p3ch on Deviant art

I think this one looks very quirky and very very clever, I like how they made her out of letters and signs to build her. I like that the letters are smaller and more crowded where the shaded parts are. The pose that she does looks awesome. I just love this because how clever that they made this one look. This is made by rafaelzoccoler on Deviant art.

This is what I did it's unfinished even though I didn't like hand drawing typography however I enjoyed making it on illustrator it was so easy. After a while you got sucked into it. Sadly I didn't finish this due to time in college, I might one day finish it. This is a portrait of me, I got a picture of myself and put it into illustrator and then I added a new layer and started to do the typography bit. Then every now and then I'd hide the picture behind it and see how it looked like behind it. I really am proud on how this turned out I needed to finish the hair on the other side and finish the detail and neck. This was fun I really like illustrator. We were taught to use Photoshop which I didn't like much.

My Idols

This is a final piece I made for one of my units in college you had to draw or do something that represents your idol or fetish or religion whatever that inspires you. I picked Demi Lovato and I just drew her singing and on the left wrote a lyric from the song Skyscraper and then on the right I wrote the speech she did that made me cry. and then on the top just wrote Stay Strong since that's what she says and that's what she has on her wrists. It firstly drawn with a pencil first then I outlined it with a pen and then coloured it in with watercolour and outlined it again. I am so proud on how this had turned out it's unbelievable how awesome it turned out.
As you can see this is Ellen Degeneres I am quite a fan of hers and I wanted to try and draw her, I am quite pleased with the result.

Digital drawings

These are something I did on paint and was quite proud of it, I am just learning how to use illustrator now in college.
