Roald Dahl

Parents from Norway but they came to Wales and he was born in Cardiff in 1916. He went to boarding school where he was very unhappy and where beatings happened regularly. After school he went to work for Shell and he was sent to East Africa to work, here he experienced all the adventure and excitement he craved. When the war broke out he joined the RAF and became a first class fighter pilot, but he crashed his plane and was in hospital for about 6 months while he regained his health he did fly again but he began to experience bad headaches that caused him to black out and he therefore had to give up flying.
He was sent to America as an example of an ace pilot to encourage Americans to stay with the war effort as they had just joined after Pearl Harbour being attached.
It was during this time that he began writing a book "The Gremlins" with Walt Disney. His books are mostly fantasy and full of imagination. They are always a little cruel with a final twist, You always find the theme of the story being told by the child with lots of evil and bad grown ups but always one who is good and makes up for all the bad people. There is always some humour a thrilling mix here of the grotesqu and comic. A common theme is that people are not what they appear to be.
He wrote books for adults and children such as James and the Giant Peach
Fantastic Mr Fox
Gremlins
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Matilda
The Witches
The Twits
The BFG

He also wrote screenplays and was who wrote the screenplay for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He had his own illustrator.

I don't like the illustrations much their too simple and childish but I think that's the beauty of it, It's like that children drew the images. It has it's own style if you look at the image you know straight it's Roald Dahl. His images are also very colourful.
